When everything is born by chance...

THE IDEA

The idea for this project was born when I happened to see some photos of an interior on the net. The project looked interesting, and I decided to recreate this Scandinavian loft using only these online images. I started modeling and texturing the small apartment from scratch. The idea of animating it came to me later when I understood the potential of this environment. I used some objects from the Cosmos Chaos library, reworking them to resemble those in the reference images.

THE PROJECT

At the beginning of the modeling process, I wanted to make only the front view of the kitchen. I didn’t want to spend time matching the perspective view of the photo with the 3ds Max camera. Instead, I worked “by eye”, without loading the image as a background, and used the height of the kitchen cabinet as a reference…. Bad, very bad idea. This choice wasted a lot of my time.

SIMULATIONS

To make the environment more alive, I generated 4 simulations.

The first and simplest was the simulation of the curtains blowing in the wind.

The second simulation, more computationally problematic, was the water calculated using the “Chaos Phoenix” plug-in.

The chair and its fur gave me a bit of trouble. I solved the simulation with a few dozen trials and the 3ds Max “Cloth” and “Hair and Fur” modifiers.

Finally, I racked my brain on how to create the lamp. After starting the modeling process by hand (crazy idea), I found in the 3ds Max “Cloth” modifier to be the solution.

Time, time, I need time!

VIDEO

It took a long time, with hours and hours of work on the 3ds Max Curve Editor, to obtain this realistic animation. Do you like the result? Speaking of time, 18 dual Xeons machines calculated the 2,560 frames over 7 days!

I did the video editing in After Effects, and also added audio effects and a bit of “behind the scenes”. This process took three days. Making the Scandinavian loft took over a month, including modeling, texturing, lighting setup, simulation, rendering, and compositing … It was more work than expected, but I hope you enjoy the result.

You will find the .cxr file in high-res, with my personal Tone mapping system, inside the book Corona: THE COMPLETE GUIDE.
